The Rocky Mountains extend to the Brooks Range in northern Alaska, and the entire range is separated from the Alaska Range by the Yukon and Porcupine river systems. These peaks are among the world's highest mountain range within the Arctic Circle. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge encompasses the eastern part of the range and protects one of the world's most pristine wilderness areas, giving homes to hundreds of bird species, dozens of land mammals and several species of marine mammals.
